How Dangote’s Giant Refinery Is Shaking Up Europe’s Fuel Industry

The rise of the Dangote Refinery in Nigeria is sending shockwaves through the global energy industry. With a massive capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, this megaproject is not only the largest refinery in Africa but also one of the biggest worldwide. As production ramps up, the impact is being felt thousands of miles away in Europe, where gasoline exports to West Africa are collapsing, refineries are under pressure, and entire supply chains are being forced to adapt.

For decades, European refineries supplied much of West Africa’s fuel, with Nigeria as one of their largest customers. At one point, one in every five barrels of gasoline produced in Europe ended up in Nigerian markets. But by mid-2025, that figure had dropped to just one in ten. In the first half of the year, European gasoline exports to West Africa averaged only 285,000 barrels per day, down by a staggering one-third compared to the same period in 2024. This sudden drop is directly linked to the rapid ramp-up of Dangote, which by July 2025 was already processing around 595,000 barrels of crude per day.

The consequences are dramatic. Gasoline is piling up in European storage hubs like Rotterdam, inventories are rising, and profit margins for gasoline-heavy refineries are shrinking. Some facilities, such as the Lindsey refinery in the UK, have already closed after failing to find buyers. Others are desperately trying to adapt by shifting yields, targeting new markets, or investing in modernization. Analysts warn that unless as much as 600,000 barrels per day of refining capacity in Europe is retired or repurposed, the oversupply problem could worsen, leading to further closures.

Meanwhile, Dangote enjoys several key advantages. The refinery’s modern design gives it the flexibility to produce a range of products—gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and even petrochemicals—based on demand. Backed by Nigerian government policies aimed at reducing fuel import dependency, the project is
