Having spent many winters in both Iceland and New York City, I’m struck by the contrasting experiences these two places offer during the coldest months of the year. As someone used to Icelandic winters, visiting NYC during this season feels like stepping into a different world.

In Iceland, winter means long, dark nights that seem to stretch on forever. The sun barely peeks over the horizon, and when it does, it’s only for a few precious hours. It’s a season of embracing cozy darkness and watching the Aurora Borealis dance in the night sky. However, the ever-changing weather—where snowstorms can quickly turn into rain or icy winds—makes planning a challenge.
NYC, on the other hand, feels like a winter oasis in comparison. The sun rises much earlier here, flooding the streets with light well before I’ve had my morning coffee. This abundance of daylight, even on the coldest days, is invigorating. It’s a stark contrast to Iceland’s mid-winter gloom, where the lack of light can weigh heavily on your spirit.
The weather in NYC also feels more predictable. Yes, there are occasional snowstorms or cold snaps, but they pale in comparison to Iceland’s volatile, often unpredictable conditions. Walking through the city’s bustling streets, wrapped in a warm coat, feels more manageable and less daunting than braving the icy gusts of Reykjavik.
For someone used to Iceland’s stark and dramatic winter landscapes, NYC offers a welcome break. Its stable weather, earlier sunrises, and vibrant energy provide a refreshing change that brightens even the darkest winter days.
