Well, you all know or have heard what is happening in Eastern Congo. The M23 rebel group has captured Goma, a city of over a million people, fueling fears of a full-scale war. For over two decades, this silent war has ravaged the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. A war that has caused nearly 6 million deaths, making this tragedy one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II. Half of the victims are children. This conflict is not a simple civil war. It is a merciless economic battle for control of Congolese resources. Coltan, cobalt, gold and so on. These minerals essential to our smartphones, batteries, planes and defense industries are at the heart of the chaos that is bloodying Kivou.
But who is really benefiting from this war? Behind armed groups like the M23, there is a well-oiled system where foreign powers pull the strings. Rwanda, accused of plundering Congolese resources, is not acting alone: it benefits from the direct support of the United States and the European Union.
