In this documentary, we provide an in-depth exploration of the Coloured identity across Southern Africa, uncovering the hidden histories and vibrant cultures of a community that has shaped the continent for centuries. We journey beyond the Cape to the "Northern Frontier" of Zimbabwe and Zambia, where early pioneers established urban societies in Bulawayo and Harare and built the economic foundations of the Zambian Copperbelt. The film highlights how these families navigated colonial boundaries while creating a unique "Euro-African" heritage that remains central to the region's administrative and technical history.
A significant portion of the documentary focuses on the "Zulu-Coloureds" of KwaZulu-Natal. We address the linguistic fluidity of those who identify as Coloured but are native IsiZulu speakers. This challenges the Cape-centric narrative and shows a community deeply anchored in the indigenous heartland of the East Coast. We also pay tribute to "The Fighters," such as the legendary Dulcie September and the activists of the United Democratic Front.
