Goree Island Senegal #solotravel #senegal #visitafrica
Gorée island is a small landmass off the coast of Dakar, in Senegal. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French.
It is now a UNESCO world heritage site. It continues to serve as a reminder of a man’s inhumanity to man and the extreme violence of the slave trade.
When you walk the narrow streets, you will come upon the House of Slaves, now a museum. The building is shaped like a boat. My guy told me that they intentionally designed it that way it made it easier for the slave traders to determine how many bodies they could fit on an actual ship.
It feels haunted to me. It’s a beautiful place but at the same time horrible things happened there. I would not say it was a highlight of my visit to Dakar but I felt seeing it myself was necessary and I’m glad that I did.
Join me tonight on my #YouTube #Channel for Thursday Tea time when I will talk all about my visit to Dakar Senegal. Be sure to tune in at 7 PM EST/ 6 PM CST. 🫖🫖🫖🫖
