Dear Black travelers: You’re not a photo op.
I don’t let strangers take pictures of me when I travel anymore. I used to think it was harmless. But then I really stopped to think about how weird it is to treat someone like they’re on display. Like an exhibit. Or worse, like an animal in a zoo.
And then I remembered the very real history of Black people literally being placed in human zoos so people could gawk at our features not too long ago.
Whether it’s curiosity, fetishization, or just plain entitlement, it’s not okay. In this video, I’m breaking down exactly why it’s wrong and why protecting your peace (and your image) should always come first.
