Hi Everyone! I'm so glad you're here! Join us this week as we explore the beautiful city we are living in with Boundless Life for 3 months, Sintra, Portugal.
Today we are visiting Quinta da Regaleira. Quinta da Regaleira is a palace and estate located in the town of Sintra, Portugal. The property was built by Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Portuguese businessman, in the early 20th century. The estate is known for its unique architecture and beautiful gardens, which incorporate elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline styles.
One of the most distinctive features of Quinta da Regaleira is its well-known Initiation Well, which was designed to represent Dante's Inferno. The well consists of a spiraling staircase that descends nine stories into the ground, and is surrounded by carved symbols and statues that are said to represent alchemy and other esoteric beliefs.
In addition to the Initiation Well, the estate also features a palace, a chapel, a lake, a grotto, and numerous other architectural and decorative features. The gardens are particularly notable, and include a variety of terraces, fountains, and statues, as well as a network of underground tunnels and caves. making it the perfect palace to visit with kids.
Today, Quinta da Regaleira is open to the public and is a popular tourist destination in Portugal. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the most beautiful and intriguing historic estates in Europe.
