What was stagecoach travel really like for Black Americans in the 1800s?

For many people, stagecoach travel is remembered as rugged adventure, dusty roads, and the romance of the Old West. But that version leaves out a harsher truth. For Black travelers, the journey could mean humiliation, danger, exclusion, and constant uncertainty.

In this video, we explore what travel looked like when race determined where you could sit, whether you could eat, where you could sleep, and whether you would arrive safely at all. From riding on top of the coach instead of inside, to avoiding sundown towns, to carrying passes and papers, Black travelers often had to plan routes around hostility instead of convenience.

Using firsthand accounts, historical records, and forgotten stories, this video uncovers the reality behind transportation in 19th-century America.
