The Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur — one of the most famous stretches of California’s Highway 1 — was shut down for years after massive landslides. After 3 years and $162 million in repairs, it finally reopened. We drove it just weeks later in our van… and it was a lot more intense than we expected.
We’d wanted to drive this stretch for years, but it kept getting wiped out. Regent’s Slide. Paul’s Slide. Entire sections of road gone. When it finally reopened, we knew we had to go. We just didn’t realize what it would feel like once we were on it.
This video follows our full drive down the Pacific Coast Highway from Carmel-by-the-Sea through the heart of Big Sur — past Bixby Bridge, the rebuilt landslide zones, Paul’s Slide, and all the way to San Simeon. Plus elephant seals, a coastal campground, and a Highway 1-inspired cooking segment you don’t want to miss.
Would you drive this road in an RV? Tell us in the comments — we read every one.
