Two things can be true at the same time. Mauritius can be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen AND also be a place where I was very obviously racially profiled upon arrival at the airport. Observing the impact of colonialism on people of color is always fascinating, but also sometimes painful. Beautiful island, lovely people overall but problematic immigration folks at the airport. If you’re going to stop people and interrogate them about why they are visiting your country make sure you throw a couple 🖐🏻 people in there too. If just for optics sake. So now I can never think of my visit without also thinking about my experience upon arrival. Pretty island tho.
