The Sistine chapel of Mexicoπ²π½| Solo Travel Tips
About 8.5 miles (20 minute drive) outside of the city of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico lies the small community of Atontonilco home to the he Sanctuary of JesΓΊs Nazareno de AtotonilcoΒ (its official name is βSanctuary of God and of the Homelandβ)Β also known as The Sistine Chapel of Mexico. It is a Unesco World Heritage site and is significant in Mexican History.
While the outside of the Sanctuary is not particularly fancy, the interior is amazing. The walls are completely covered by murals, inscriptions and paintings. The paintings on the walls and ceilings are the work of the baroque artist Antonio MartΓnez de Pocasangre. The ceilings of the Sanctuary include visual representations ofΒ the whole GospelΒ and scenes from Christian history and paintings of several saints.
If you are visiting Miguel de Allende, and you should, take a day trip and visit the church and then visit one of the Hot Spring nearby to round out your day.π
