The Amazigh, or Berbers, are indigenous ethnic groups found in North Africa. They have a long history and cultural heritage, predating the Arab arrival or Arab conquest of the region. The Amazigh people are found in the Maghreb region of North Africa, where they live in scattered communities across parts of Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and to a lesser extent Tunisia, Mauritania, northern Mali and northern Niger. Smaller Berber communities are also found in Burkina Faso and Egypt's Siwa Oasis. They have preserved their distinct cultural identity and language, known as Tamazight, despite historical influences. Amazigh speaking population could well number around 20 million in Morocco and around 30 million throughout North Africa and the Sahel as a whole. The Amazigh are known for their contributions to arts, music, and handicrafts, as well as their vibrant traditional clothing and jewelry. As the indigenous people of North Africa they continue to seek recognition and inclusivity in the societies they inhabit, making them an integral part of North Africa's diverse heritage.
