The Hidden Gems of Western Kansas | Nicodemus and Monument Rocks

👁 1.1K views 📅 Jan 23, 2026 Watch on YouTube ↗

In Day 2 of our Kansas road trip, we visit the only remaining western town established by African Americans after the Civil War: Nicodemus, Kansas. But getting there wasn't easy—my truck battery died (again) in freezing temperatures, threatening to end the trip early.
After exploring the incredible history of the Exodusters who settled this land in 1877, we grabbed a homemade burger and headed to one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas: Monument Rocks. These massive chalk pyramids rise out of the flat prairie and completely change how you see this state. Finally, we set up camp at Historic Lake Scott State Park for the night.
Join me for a mix of hidden history, survival struggles, and the unexpected beauty of the Kansas prairie.
📍 Locations Visited:
* Nicodemus National Historic Site: The oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.
* Monument Rocks (Chalk Pyramids): Massive 70ft tall chalk formations.
* Historic Lake Scott State Park: Our campsite for the night.
