Updated - Mexico has a deep African history that rarely gets talked about. In this video, I travel across Mexico to learn more about the Black communities that helped shape this country and still live here today.

I start in Xalapa, Veracruz, at the Xalapa Museum of Anthropology, home to the largest collection of artifacts from the Olmec civilization, often called the mother culture of Mesoamerica.

Then I visit Yanga, Veracruz, a town named after Gaspar Yanga, a cimarron leader who led one of the first successful rebellions against Spanish rule in 1609. Yanga is known as one of the first free Black settlements in the Americas.

Finally, I travel to Lagunas de Chacahua National Park in Oaxaca, a coastal fishing village where many of the locals are Afro Mexican descendants. I spend time with the community, learning about their culture, traditions, and what it means to be Black and Mexican today.

This video is about more than history. It is about identity, survival, and a part of Mexico that the world rarely sees.
