Solo Travel Safety Tip: Always travel with a smoke and carbon monoxide detector! #TravelSafe #TravelSafetyTips #Shorts
A couple months ago 3 people died mysteriously at a Sandals resort in the Bahamas. It turns out that their deaths were due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
In many countries carbon monoxide detection is not a standard and many homes do not have smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors. Many hotels may have smoke detectors but not carbon
Monoxide detectors.
I always take a travel sized smoke and carbon monoxide detector in my carry-on. I feel like it’s better to bring one and not need it then to need one and not have it.
When I arrive, I take it out and install the batteries, put it in a high spot if Im using it for smoke and carbon monoxide detection. If I’m using it for carbon monoxide detection, I use a lower surface like a dressing table.
Consider doing these 3 things to avoid issues with carbon monoxide on solo travel:
1. Inquire as to whether the hotel or short-term rental you book has smoke AND carbon monoxide detection in its rooms2. If it does not, bring your own smoke & carbon monoxide detector and USE it. I like this one and it’s the one I travel with:

I not only bring my own device I also bring batteries to ensure I can just set it up and turn it on.3. Avoid using fireplaces in short-term rentals. Many of them are not vented so gas can build up in the space quite quickly. If you must use the fireplace, make sure a window in the room is open while it is in use and NEVER go to sleep with it on. Make sure you shut it off completely.

The most important thing to remember when traveling alone, especially as a woman, is to practice situational awareness and common sense. If it feels wrong even for a minute don’t do it.
