Hi Rovers! Just here to share some quick solo travel tips as I pack and yap for my solo 31st birthday trip to Peru!
Tips:
Safety first - Make sure you’re going to a city or country where you know the basics of the language, culture, safe neighborhoods, neighborhoods to avoid, and things to do! Don’t completely wing it on a solo trip!
Stay connected - This is not the time to go ghost always have a plan and a back up plan for keeping your loved ones updated. Use apps like Find My Friends or WhatsApp to stay connected. But also make sure you prearrange phone service with your provider in this new country or get a local eSIM if your phone is unlocked.
Be a local - When traveling solo blend in as much as possible. Dress appropriately and avoid drawing unnecessary attention.
Follow your intuition - I always say your intuition is your first connection to God so if something feels off, it probably is.
Learn the Basics - Knowing a few key phrases in the local language can be a game changer. Try Duolingo but there’s other ways to learn and immerse yourself before a visit like watching movies in that language, following influencers from that country, etc.
Protect your coins - Hidden pockets, money belts, and locks can be a life saver!
What do you want from this trip? - For me solo traveling is for making new friends, gaining confidence, and collecting unique and sometimes wild stories!
Health is Wealth - Carry a basic first aid kit and any necessary medications. For Peru I’m already prepared with all things altitude sickness related like nausea meds, smelling salts, water bottle with filter to stay hydrated, etc.
Your phone - Keep it charged it's a wealth of knowledge. Use apps like Google Maps, Citymapper, to time, Google translate, etc.
Plan ahead but embrace the unexpected - Do your due diligence and stay vigilant but accept things won't always go as planned!
