(Learned this directly from the State Department)
MIA is for airports, not passports.
But if yours goes missing while you’re soaking up the sun, no need to cut your trip short.
Here’s what you need to do:
1️⃣ Report it missing – File a police report to protect yourself in case anyone tries to use your passport.
2️⃣ Contact the embassy – If you’re in Jamaica, you can reach the U.S. Embassy at 876-702-6000 or start the replacement process online.
3️⃣ Gather your ID – Bring any available IDs, like a copy of your passport, driver’s license, or flight itinerary.
Once you’ve followed those steps, the embassy can issue you an emergency passport—usually the same or next business day and you can get back to enjoying your trip.
By the way, it’s good practice to register for STEP on the State Department website for important updates during your trip.
