Living and Traveling Abroad: Dealing with Anti-Black Racism
Just the other day, I had a very problematic interaction with a white American living in the same town that I live in here in Mexico.
It was a reminder that no matter where you live or travel in the world, when you’re Black, you’re going to encounter anti-Black racism and microaggressions — sometimes in the most unexpected places.
This video isn’t meant to discourage anyone from traveling or moving abroad. I love my life living abroad, and I still believe travel is one of the best forms of freedom and self-care we have. But it is meant to be honest about what it can be like living and traveling while Black.
If you’re a white person watching this and you don’t agree with my lived experience, this might be the moment to simply listen — not debate. I will block and delete anyone who tries to gaslight or minimize my experience. Govern yourselves accordingly.
