What is it like to be Black in Tbilisi, Georgia? In this video, I share an unforgettable encounter I had during Georgia’s Independence Day celebration. I was lucky enough to meet two African students who came all the way to Georgia to study medicine. They opened up about their personal journeys. We discussed what life is like as international students, the challenges they faced, and how it feels to live in a country most people know little about.
We walk through the lively streets of Old Tbilisi, join the crowds on Rustaveli Avenue, and experience Georgian culture, food, and music on one of the country’s biggest national holidays. But the heart of this story is their experience: finding community, dealing with culture shock, and navigating what it means to be African students in Eastern Europe.

Its diverse architecture encompasses Eastern Orthodox churches, ornate art nouveau buildings and Soviet Modernist structures. Looming over it all are Narikala, a reconstructed 4th-century fortress, and Kartlis Deda, an iconic statue of the “Mother of Georgia.
