I Couldn’t Find Black People in Panama City. And Then I Found Out Why
I went to Panamá City ready to see Black folks everywhere, but I couldn’t find them in the popular tourist areas and didn’t know where else to look. People kept telling me I had to leave the city to see the Black population, but I was like na. No way there are so few Black people in Panamá City given the history of the canal.
So I talked to my homegirl who also happens to be a public historian of Black history in the Americas and the co-founder of Afro Latinx Travel (a group that leads tours in Latin America focused on the history of afrodescendents)
Dash Harris Machado had me shook during our conversation and then my own research led to be some disappointing revelations about Panamá City’s Black history.
