How Zanzibar Almost Became Its Own Country

Zanzibar is one of the most fascinating places in Africa, known for its white sandy beaches, bustling spice markets, and rich Swahili culture. But beyond the beauty and tourism lies a dramatic history that few people know. In 1964, Zanzibar came dangerously close to becoming its own independent country, an event that could have reshaped the political landscape of East Africa forever.

For centuries, Zanzibar was a crossroads of civilizations. Arab sultans, Indian traders, and African communities built a thriving economy centered on cloves, ivory, and the Indian Ocean trade. Stone Town became a melting pot of languages, cultures, and commerce. But beneath the prosperity, tensions simmered. The majority African population lived under the control of Arab elites, and the legacies of slavery and inequality left deep social divisions. When the British finally declared Zanzibar a protectorate and later handed over independence to the Sultan’s Arab-dominated government, the majority of Zanzibaris felt sidelined, setting the stage for revolution.

Just weeks after independence, the Zanzibar Revolution erupted. Led by John Okello, African revolutionaries overthrew the Sultan in a swift and violent uprising, creating the People’s Republic of Zanzibar. Thousands of Arabs and South Asians were killed or fled the island, while Abeid Karume took leadership of the new government. Zanzibar was free, but suddenly vulnerable. The Cold War superpowers quickly turned their attention to the island. Western nations feared communist influence, while the Soviet Union and China saw an opportunity to expand in East Africa. Zanzibar was independent, but isolated and at the center of global strategic interests.

To protect Zanzibar and stabilize the region, Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika orchestrated a union just three months later. The two nations merged to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, soon renamed Tanzania. While this union brought political stability and protection,
