The pier was built in 1888, and conceived as the final part of the Barranquilla maritime terminal located in Puerto Colombia. Between 1893 and 1936 it functioned as Barranquilla's maritime terminal for the embarkation and disembarkation of goods and people, and until the 1920s it was considered the most important maritime port in Colombia.
