I had never seen a Black woman so peaceful and happy.
When I traveled to Slovenia I was expecting to see amazing castles, taste great food - Slovenia is know for its quality beef - and definitely cruise down the Ljubljanica River.
But when they took me visit the South I was not expecting to meet a Black woman - pregnant - and glowing like the heavens were smiling down on her.
We had lunch at their home. Massive amounts of land owned by her and Slovenian husband, while the mother-in-law would visit regularly to provide support as they prepare for their first child.
I saw and felt nothing but pure joy from this Black woman. She is supported, protected, and loved unconditionally.
They met in Chicago. The husband would travel back and forth a few times. I asked if they’d ever move back to the U.S.
He said: “I saw how they treated my wife when I would visit. I don’t think we’d want to go back there.”
In the U.S., we’ve seen too many headlines. Four Black women killed by their partners just this year.
We judge Black people when they love or date outside their race. We judge them when they don’t date the “right” kind of Black person.
But my question is this:
Isn’t happiness the goal? Black joy? Safety?
And if you find that in the south of Slovenia—peace, protection, and a life where you’re not treated like a threat—who are we to stand in the way of that?
This story made me think differently about what what love means and finding the “American Dream” in unexpecting places.
We had to include this story in Issue #5 of Black Travel Magazine.
