Reneilwe Morema reports on the shocking political shift happening on South African social media. Popular X (formerly Twitter) influencer Chris Excel, with over 4 million followers, is encouraging his audience to vote for the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) — a political party led by Boers who broke away from the National Party in 1994 after the party moved to end Apartheid.
Today, FF Plus sits comfortably within the Government of National Unity, still holding on to its Afrikaner nationalist roots. What’s disturbing is that many Black South Africans are echoing Chris Excel’s message, saying they would rather bring back the Boers than have the EFF or ANC in power — citing “Black crime” and Malema’s stance on African migrants.
But let’s be honest — crime is not a racial thing!
This rhetoric dangerously feeds into the same colonial logic that said Black people are unfit to govern themselves. It’s self-hate disguised as political strategy, and it exposes just how deep mental colonization still runs in post-Apartheid South Africa.
