February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the history, contributions, and culture of Black Canadians & people of African Descent. This Black History Month we are honouring Black leaders from Vancouver who are no longer with us, including prominent community leader, lifeguard and swim teacher, Joe Fortes, renowned performing artist, Thelma Towns (nee Gibson), and former basketball player with the Harlem Globetrotters, and founder of the Kitsilano Youth Basketball League, Mel “Trick” Davis.
