Black Africans Amongst Others Arrived in the Americas Long Before Columbus. For years, the history of the Americas has been taught as a story of discovery and conquest, with Christopher Columbus as the hero who "discovered" the New World. But recent evidence suggests that this history is much more complex and diverse than we have traditionally been taught. One of the main pieces of evidence supporting the notion that black Africans and other people had visited the Americas before Columbus is the presence of African and non-indigenous artifacts in the Americas. For example, there are carvings of African faces in the ruins of ancient Mexican and South American civilizations, such as the Olmec heads. These carvings, along with other cultural artifacts, suggest that there was trade and cultural exchange between Africa and the Americas.
