Are Black travelers safe during global wars?
The short answer: YES. But still exercise every travel precaution.
Here's what I mean:
1. Check in with the embassy when you land
2. Share your location with trusted community
3. Avoid unsafe areas and large crowds of protest or demonstration
In my experience, Black travelers in particular have been afforded this pass when the U.S. government wreaks havoc because most of the world also recognizes the struggles of Black Americans with the same government.
There's also this belief that if your government fights mine, then we're beefing too. And that has never been my experience.
We should give people more credit — they are able, and often do, separate government from citizens.
I lived in China during Trump's trade war. I was in Amsterdam two months ago. I just returned from Morocco during regional conflicts.
And every single time, locals ask ME if I'm okay. If my family is okay. "We see how they treat your people over there."
They separate us from them. They separate citizens from government.
Dave Chappelle joked about this years ago: The Taliban ain't looking for us.
That said — this is NOT permission to travel recklessly. Take every precaution. Stay informed. Check State Department travel advisories. Register with the embassy. Avoid protests and demonstrations.
The world is always doing something.
Are y'all still traveling? How are you feeling about it?
